In 2013, we had the unforgettable privilege of spending the night at the caretaker’s house at Point Arena Lighthouse in Mendocino County, California. Built in 1908 after the original lighthouse was destroyed by the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the lighthouse stands as a beacon of resilience along the rugged Pacific coast. During our stay, we had the entire property to ourselves, and it felt as if we were the only people on Earth. Surrounded by the vast ocean and dramatic cliffs, we experienced a profound sense of peace and solitude. As night fell, the only sound was the rhythmic crashing of the waves against the shoreline—a soothing, calming melody that echoed through the darkness. It was a wonderful experience, one that left us feeling deeply connected to nature and grateful for such a rare and tranquil moment.

The climbing to the top of the lighthouse is the most impressive part of the experience. Yeah, that is how you will feel after going up 140 steps to the top. Oh, well, the view is also just as impressive. That is if you are still able to see straight and got caught up with your breathing.

Drive up lighthouse! No long walk to enter. Tallest lighthouse on the west coast which you can climb the long staircase up to the top for $10. Absolutely beautiful views! When I went the wind was super high. I could feel the vibration of the wind through the walls once inside.

I don’t normally leave reviews, but this visit was spectacular! We enjoyed watching for whales and taking the tour. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I had the pleasure of talking to Cadence, who was very knowledgeable about the lighthouse and the stock in the gift store. She was thorough in wrapping all our fragile items, and she didn’t treat us like we were just visitors passing through, but like we were friends. We will definitely be back very soon! Hoping to stay in the lodging units next time!
