Everything was amazing! Gem salad with watermelon, mint, and cherries- flavorful and refreshing, plenty for 2, taster for 4. Charred beets and creama, 5 chunks- I love beets and I love anything with a char, so perfect. The beets were perfectly cooked and simple, and the creama balanced the sweetness with the perfect kick. Carnitas came with black beans and 3 tortillas- besides wanting more of the fresh tortillas nothing was lacking- this alone could easily fill 2 people. But we also got the whole chicken on top of all that. Moist and flavorful. Came on a large pile of flavorful rice with a side of corn and greens and more tortillas. Easily this dish could fill 4 people. So yes, we way ordered, but that was the plan, plenty of left over for another whole meal! Sat at the bar, a little noisy and lots of activity but could easily have a conversation. Oh and the drinks- got a Paloma and Strawberry margarita- not lacking in potency and with very fresh ingredients- juices and fruit puree.

    Okay, hear me out.

The food here is insane! Totally get how they got a Michelin star. Amazing flavors, big portions, everything is homemade. If you are chasing food and flavor, come here.

Now, why only 3 stars then? The service: it’s not good. For context, we made our reservation about a month in advance and were excited because this was our first time here. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated on time. They initially got our order wrong, which wasn’t a big deal, it happens. About half way through eating (after only being there for 25-30 minutes) they started to try to clear the table, as in taking the food off the table that we were actively eating. That was the second weird thing. Then, as we’re finishing our meals, we asked the see a dessert menu and ordered. As they delivered dessert, they brought the check and we paid. Before we were even finished eating the dessert, they came over and said “thank you for coming, we need the table”. I shit you not, we were rushed out so fast that I literally grabbed the last bit of dessert with my bare hands so that we could eat it. Strangely, there were tables around us with patrons that had been there before us and were allowed to stay as we were being rushed out.

All together, the food was amazing. Compliments to the chef! But the service was seriously some of the worst I’ve had at any restaurant, let alone a Michelin star restaurant. What gets me is that they give you the bill before you’re done, so you pay and tip. And then the service gets even worse, so it makes you wish you could reevaluate your tip.

I wish we wanted to go back because the food was good, but honestly it’s not worth the bad experience. Oakland and SF are filled with amazing food, so no need to go somewhere with bad service.

What an absolute gem of a restaurant! I’ve wanted to dine here for years and finally made it happen. There are tons of vegan and vegetarian options and the food is phenomenal. They also have a nice mezcal selection. We had the taquitos, tamales, asparagus main, and queso. Would absolutely order everything again. Oh! And the staff is so nice and attentive—we had the pleasure of having a wonderful fellow as our main server (I hate that I didn’t catch his name!) but he was so kind and friendly, really made our dining experience even better.

Really enjoyed my dinner here. Thought the beets were super special. Wasn’t crazy over the red mole, the chicken was really good and the squash was super sweet and the sauce didn’t really have much spice or flavor to a company it’s surroundings. I would get something else if I came again. Fish tacos looked crazy good kind of difficult to eat though but that’s part of the fun. Love the vibe, everyone inside seemed vibrant and happy the lighting is really good it’s like bright but not an eyesore whatsoever it’s almost cozy, just felt really comfortable. Really liked the staff they seemed happy to be there.

If you’re here for the first time, I would recommend:
    – Smoked Trout tostadas: great appetizer! Beautifully balanced.
    – Spicy Carrots Misantla: this is a vegan dish but it’s so flavorful and memorable. I want them to release a cookbook so I can recreate it.
    – Smoked Duck Confit: rich and delicious.

I would skip the potato flautas (unremarkable). The pollo rostizado is a generous serving; it can easily serve 4 people. But the taste of the marinade is just average, and the salsa verde is dialed down for the Piedmont and Allendale gringos.

It’s a cute place for date night. The first time I came here, the music was way too loud. They turned it down the last time.

Service during my last visit could be improved. They’re VERY pushy on the chips and salsa; we were asked 5 times if we wanted them( which are not complimentary! And with added 10.75% tax and 18% tip, will add another $11+ to your bill. Dining in Oakland is ridiculous!). Something as simple as that should be complimentary honestly, like Korean banchan.

We also were asked for refills on our cocktails and desserts multiple times by multiple staff. It felt like they were trying to add more items to our bill, despite us having 2 cocktails and 4 dishes already.

FYI, they don’t do any complimentary bday treats or wishes. I listed my reservation as a bday dinner on Resy and it didn’t seem to make a difference. A greeting would have at least been nice!

On the upside, we were seated all the way in the back near the bathroom, and Chef Dominica constantly checked in on us during our meal. She even waved when we left! That was nice of her.
