Absolutely delicious and authentic Mexican food in the heart of Old Town San Diego. The handmade tortillas are crafted right in the window, and were the star of the show (try the corn ones!). I ordered a mini molcajete and was totally blown away.

Of all restaurants in old town San Diego, The Old Town Mexican Cafe in my opinion is the best. I have been to almost every place and although there are many restaurants that feature different specialties, overall they do everything well.
The women in front making the hand made corn and flour tortillas are not just for show, they are delicious and many people order them as a starter (with some butter) since them come out hot and fresh. I am usually a corn tortilla person but here, the flour is amazing and similar to a crepe.
I highly recommend the chicken mole, carnitas (crispy), and the California Burrito.

Food was good. The coffee arrived in large cups. The flour tortillas were good but I’ve had better at Carnival market on 8th Street in national city. The water cups were large and had 1/4th ice which is great.
What was outstanding was the newly renovated bathrooms. They were super clean too. Secondly I didn’t know they had a parking lot on the side of the building.
This was my first visit here and recommend the place.

Flew in from the Bay Area for a day trip to have authentic Mexican food, the restaurant next door from old town Mexican café lied about their opening hours so we gave Old Town Mexican Cafe a try. We were glad we ate here, the food was delicious, salsa and chips was the bomb and the coco pina was tasteful. They also have air conditioning which made the experience better. Diego was our server, great guy. We will be coming back to Old Town Mexican Cafe and the restaurant next door, they lost a customer.

Went here for a late lunch and everything about it was fine. Nothing outstanding but also not bad.
They give you free chips and salsa. The chips are good and so is the salsa although the salsa is a bit spicy. We also ordered guacamole which was good but could have used more acid and there were some larger chunks of avocado in it.
For lunch we ordered a California burrito, a pollo asado burrito, and our friend for the carne asada plate.
The burritos are big and overall were fine. We liked the tortillas and the amount of filling in the burrito, but none of the flavors particularly stood out to us.
The vibe is like an old time cafe/cantina. The service was fine. It is a fine place to go for lunch or dinner but don’t think you will be blown away by the food or anything.
