Food was good but not legendary. We liked the crispy rice on the Mac n cheese but not blown away. 10 minute wait for food on a Sunday at noon, so not too bad! The Story of this luncheonette is cute, and the kitchen is built right into the historic caboose. The mushroom burger looked better than our hamburgers.

It was a chilly, foggy afternoon in Half Moon Bay. My partner and I were gonna go hike but wanted to grab a bite to eat before we started, so we stopped by Dad’s Luncheonette. This spot, built from an old train caboose is led by a former 3 Michelin star chef, so you know it must be good and good it was. Their offerings showcase a fun casual take on good take out burgers and food. We ordered the hamburger and the mushroom sandwich to try out. The hamburger was really delicious and the flavors were super satisfying. The mushroom sandwich was essentially the same as the burger but with a mushroom instead. It was also good but I would definitely choose the beef patty over the mushroom any day. It had so much more flavor and depth. Regardless, everything we tried was awesome and I will definitely go back to try more menu items. It is a little on the pricey side, but it’s a quality burger with a clear mission.

Dad Luncheonette is a true hidden gem in Half Moon Bay that offers a refreshingly unique take on roadside comfort food. The menu is small but mighty, and the Mushroom Sandwich is a standout; packed with fresh greens, savory oyster mushrooms, and a perfectly cooked egg, it hits all the right earthy notes. For something more adventurous, the Mac n Cheese comes topped with fried rice—a creative twist that might not be the cheesiest version you’ve ever had, but is undeniably satisfying in its own right.
The service here adds to the charm, as the staff is exceptionally warm and welcoming. There is a personal touch to the experience, with your meal delivered directly into your hands, neatly wrapped in a paper bag like a curated gift. It feels less like a transaction and more like a neighborly gesture, which makes the high quality of the food feel even more special.
The only practical downside is that the spot does not offer seating, making it strictly a grab-and-go operation. You’ll need to plan for a tailgate session or a short walk to a nearby bench to enjoy your meal. However, the quality of the food and the kindness of the team make it well worth the minor inconvenience of finding your own spot to dig in.

First time here since we wanted to try due to all reviews. Hamburger is ok the pickled onion is overpowering g the taste of the meat so all I can taste is the onion. My husband ordered the mushroom which he liked I had a bite but to me it’s ok. However the homemade chips and herb salad were good.
