I attend behavioral health court weekly and have learned from this experience and am grateful to have had this opportunity to learn and change I needed the structure. Judge Pekin is wonderful I hate to see him gone now.
If I could give zero stars, I would. The administrative incompetence at this courthouse is staggering, but the complete lack of accountability from the staff is what is truly unacceptable.
My husband was summoned for jury duty and dutifully checked the portal the night before. The system stated he was required to report in person. He took a full day off work, sacrificing a day’s wages, and drove 1.5 hours (a 114-mile round trip) from Fort Bragg to Ukiah, only to be told upon arrival that court had been canceled.
The clerk openly admitted to my husband and a crowd of other stranded jurors that she simply “forgot” to update the QR code and online portal system.
When he emailed the jury services department to request that they manually log his service as completed and look into a mileage exception for their error, the exact clerk who made the mistake called my husband. Instead of apologizing, she was incredibly dismissive. She gave a laundry list of excuses and told him that “he should have called the court” to double check he had jury duty instead of taking accountability for her mistake.
A 3-hour round trip, a tank of gas, and a day of lost wages is not a minor “loss” to brush off because an employee neglected to do her job. This is a significant financial harship to our family.
To treat citizens who are trying to fulfill their civic duty with such blatant disrespect is shameful. If you are a coastal resident summoned here, beware: they do not care about your time, your money, or their own mistakes.
I just went there for jury duty and it was nice. The employees are nice. Going through security at the entrance is quick and easy. Although, be warned, the sign said you must take off your belt if you are wearing one. Luckily, I wasn’t wearing jeans. Also, the entrance to the courtroom says shorts, tank tops, and hats are not allowed.
The jury room was clearly labeled, so I could find it easily. It had a water dispenser and a bunch of cups available, and some magazines to read. The room has nice windows with a view to the outside. Just across the hallway is a room with a snack vending machine and a drink vending machine.
The building looks nice. It has plenty of windows, water fountains, and bathrooms, including all-gender bathrooms.
Also, Schat’s is right across the street from one of the entrances, which is awesome.
Also, there is a nice mural on the inside with paintings of some animals.
The process for jury duty is so extremely disorganized. Rebecca is horrible rude and impatient. When we were given questionnaires she did not insure all the paperwork was together. So once we filled them out we all had to get up and grab another piece of paper. Rebecca stated she is the only clerk. Considering she also stated that this is done every Monday the process should be a lot smoother than it is. I’m am not impressed with how Ukiah is handing out the tax dollars in regards to jury duty.
