I just had an Unforgettable 4-Day Stay Filled with Charm and Treats!

I just checked out of the Palihotel after an incredible four-day stay and already can’t wait to come back. The hospitality here is unmatched!

Every single morning started perfectly thanks to Christy in the french cafe located in the hotel, who makes the most delicious iced lattes. The front desk staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming throughout my entire trip, and the unlimited candy bar was such a fun, nostalgic touch that kept me smiling.

Another major highlight was the bar area during happy hour. James makes amazing specialty drinks, and it is easily one of the best deals in town!

As for the hotel itself, the rooms are absolutely perfect for a couple or a solo traveler very comfortable and cozy. The historic elevator gave me a little bit of a scare at first, but it honestly just adds to the unique, quirky charm of the property.

If you are looking for a hotel with personality, fantastic service, and great perks, this is the place to stay!

Very bad experience in this hotel. I am never one to complain but this time I can’t help it. They told us to let them know if we wanted housekeeping to do our room. One day we forgot to tell them so it was on us, the next day we did let them know and they told us it had to be 24 hours in advance which they didn’t told us before.
The bathroom is very small, the bed is very uncomfortable. The elevator is very old. It takes ages for it to arrive and they have another one on “service” since a long time ago.
The air conditioning makes a lot of noise.

I will not be coming back. If you are paying this money to stay in a nice hotel they should at least consider we didn’t know about the 24h advance notice for the housekeeping and helped us. They didn’t clean the room for our 3 night stay, might as well stayed at an Airbnb.
The rooms feel very claustrophobic and with no natural daylight, the rooms are hot and humid even with the AC on.

I do not recommend staying here.

Basic room is small but so charming in the way it’s decorated and the amenities provided. Bed was very comfortable with nice linens. Front desk staff very courteous and helpful. 10 minute walk to Petco and just slightly off the main Gaslamp street so it’s not quite as crowded. The food at St. James diner is fantastic and we love their happy hour food/prices especially before events at Petco. The gem lettuce salad is bright and refreshing. Our kids and friends who don’t normally like clams love their clams dish. But the star is the burger-both the parisienne and the americaine are fantastic especially with a side of their fries. Cocktails are always delicious-Hugo spritz, cherry blossom old fashioned, french 75, espresso martini-all fantastic!

This is a cute and clean hotel, but the cons far outweigh the pros.
My first frustration emerged when I had arrived early to check in (about 1.5 hour prior to the 3pm check-in time). No problem, I’m early, I understand, I will be patient and wait for the 3pm check in time. I am able to leave my bags at the front desk and the person at the counter tells me they will call me when my room is ready. I left to explore the Gaslamp and returned about an hour later at 2:30ish. At this point I noticed everyone arriving after me was able to check in and get their rooms immediately. At about 3:20, I decided to go to the desk and see if my room is ready and I’m finally given a key to my room, no call.

The rooms are tiny. The mini fridge is cute but tiny and stocked with things you will likely not drink, so don’t expect to bring anything to store in it. Only one of the elevators works, so you will spend a lot of time waiting for it, or take the stairs.

My main complaint is that they came into my room and “cleaned” despite there being a very clear DO NOT DISTURB on the door. I would hold my tongue on the above complaints, but this one was the last straw.

In the future I will avoid this hotel.

Absolutely adorable hotel. The bad reviews are only because the elevator is slow, but if you’re booking this hotel you should be looking for vintage charm, and old elevators come with that territory. The rooms, hallways, restaurant, rooftop, and lobby are all thoughtfully designed with lots of character. My husband and I stayed for a few nights and loved our room and the food, and the staff were all wonderful. We’ll definitely stay here again.
