Open for lunch and dinner.
Very good sashimi..always fresh. This is not your typical Japanese restaurant with rolls etc. Its a different style. Quality of fish n shellfish are very fresh.
New omakase restaurant, located in the Ladera Country Shopper plaza in Portola Valley. Bright and clean interior, all of the sushi we had was fresh and well-presented. Decent sake selection, but only a couple of beers to choose from. Since they can only seat about 20 customers, reservation is recommended. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Large free parking lot.
Cute establishment that doesn’t overcrowd the small interior space. Service is impeccable and the waiter even noticed one of our guests was left-handed and oriented the nagiri to make it easier to pick up!
Food is of course amazingly fresh and unique — sourced locally and internationally. So flavorful!
We sat at the table where there were two menu choices, the larger of which took two hours to complete. Pace of food delivery was perfect. The dishware was so amazingly beautiful and cute! Definitely order some sake so you can pick your own sake glass among a wide variety.
Next time, I definitely want to try the limited bar seating to see the preparation by the chef up close and personal.
Had a really nice time at Hibari. Chef Taka was super friendly and the food was great, especially the sea urchin was super sweet and creamy. We ended up chatting with him for a bit during the meal and it made the whole experience feel really relaxed and personal. I definitely recommend sitting at the counter for chef’s choice!
The service was excellent. The sashimi was very fresh, and during the meal, they offered to add broth to make ochazuke (rice with tea).
However, the rice in the donburi was regular hot rice, not vinegared rice. I asked and realized that the restaurant wanted everyone to fully appreciate the freshness of the seafood and the deliciousness of the ochazuke, and didn’t want the vinegared rice to overpower the other ingredients.
