This is third time at Don Jose’s. Today we ordered some drinks and a shrimp ceviche. Ceviche was really disappointing. There’s hardly any shrimp, filled with chunks of yellow onion. Tasted frozen shrimp chopped in itty bitty pieces. I wish they make the dish more palatable with actual good quality shrimp. I understand that may cost more and I am willing to pay that extra, instead off this bowlful of onion chunks.

NEVER AGAIN! The food is far from the best, and some dishes are frankly questionable. The bar also lacks several essential ingredients needed to make quality cocktails properly. Despite this, the bar has the audacity to claim, “I’ve never had any complaints about my drinks.”
To their credit, they appear to have resolved their previous cockroach infestation. However, the overall cleanliness of the establishment still leaves much to be desired. Dust accumulates on fixtures and windowsills, and tables are often sticky. If the lack of cleanliness is this noticeable in the front of the house, it raises concerns about the condition of the kitchen.
The Assistant Manager is always kind and does his best to go above and beyond. Sadly, he is the only thing good about that place.

Don Jose’s in Castro Valley has earned a permanent spot in my rotation, and the Spicy Cheese Enchiladas are the sole reason why. I’ve been coming back for over a decade, ordering the exact same dish every single time and it has never disappointed. There’s something about the balance of heat and richness in those enchiladas that keeps pulling me back whenever I’m in the area. If you’re a fan of bold, satisfying Mexican comfort food done consistently well, this is your spot.

Server’s here were very welcoming and attentive. I saw a few customers enjoying their meals in the small patio in front of restaurant.
Food quantity was just right. My husband cleaned his plate, which says a lot. Food tasted authentic and catered to my dietary needs.
Nice atmosphere to celebrate special occasions.

The food was okay. I expected a better flavor but it was just okay. I was disappointed in the kids taco meal it had a store bought taco shell. Not cool. My Chicken Tostada was okay. Again it didn’t have an authentic flavor it was a bit bland and chicken was dry. I added the red salsa to get some flavor. On the other hand The rice & beans were good.. my family liked it lots. On the other hand staff is amazing very helpful. I will be back again to support our local restaurants but I hope the cook does a better job.
