We had a wonderful time, we have a group of people and we’re seated quickly. They have a full bar which made ordering cocktails so easy. We got mojitos, amaretto sour and cadillac margarita.
We shared shrimp and beef empanadas which were so juicy.
Do not forget to order yourself those poblano cornbread because I had to share mine and I regret it.
I was so excited to get the crispy fried whole branzino because I have been wanting a fried fish like this for so long and I was so juicy and flavorful. Will order again.
But the seafood cioppino dish was so flavorful it made the whole table wished they had ordered this.
We did try raw oyster for the first time which made the weekend oyster deal worth it.
Of course we ended with the dessert menu we got the sweet potato beignet omg I wish I order a whole plate to myself. The tres leches which was perfectly soaked and flavored. Guava cheesecake with mango sauce, this is a steam cheesecake so this just melts in your mouth.

Every visit to Bocanova reminds us why it is one of Oakland’s most reliable dinner spots. The atmosphere strikes that perfect balance of lively and relaxed, where somehow everyone looks like they are having a better night than they planned.

We went on a weekday evening and the place was packed, which immediately felt like a very good sign. Started with cocktails at the bar and could have happily stayed there all night. Bonus points for having genuinely good non alcoholic options too, because sometimes you want the fun without waking up wondering why you ordered “just one more.”

The food was fantastic from start to finish. The ceviche was incredibly fresh, the Caesar salad disappeared embarrassingly fast, and the steak was so good there was a brief moment of silence at the table which rarely happens with our group. Every dish felt thoughtful, flavorful, and beautifully prepared.

What really makes Bocanova stand out is the hospitality. The staff makes you feel taken care of without ever feeling formal or stuffy. It has that rare combination of polished service and a genuinely fun energy.

At this point, Bocanova is one of those restaurants we keep coming back to “just for a quick dinner” that somehow turns into a three hour night with dessert. Every single time.

This review is long overdue. My husband and I live within walking distance of Bocanova, and we’ve already dined here several times. I’ve also attended events here through my ceramic studio Kollektiv Clay, so I can say firsthand that both the staff and the owner are incredibly warm and welcoming.

A couple of my all-time favorite dishes—the fried mushrooms and fried polenta—weren’t on the menu during our most recent visit. I’m hoping they’re just rotating dishes seasonally, because they’re absolutely delicious and definitely worth ordering if you ever see them available.

On this visit, we came for happy hour and stayed for dinner. My husband had a michelada and a beer, and I ordered a mocktail that was excellent (though I’ve also had their cocktails before, and they’re fantastic). We started with the crab deviled eggs, which are always a must-order for me. Any of their ceviches are amazing. We also tried the fried fish sliders, which were very good, and the scallops, which were cooked perfectly. My husband ordered a dinner special—a hearty oxtail stew—and finished every bite. Other standout dishes we’ve enjoyed in the past include the fried cauliflower and their tacos.

Everything we’ve had here has been consistently delicious. I was too full for dessert this time, but I’ve had the bread pudding before and would easily call it their best dessert.

I highly recommend Bocanova. The food and drinks are excellent, the service is consistently top-notch, and the staff is genuinely friendly. It’s a place we love supporting and returning to again and again.

Stopped by for happy hour. Good times.

Drinks- got wine and mocktail. My guest said the Jamaica was super refreshing.

Food- we got shrimp sliders, fish sliders, Brussels sprouts, and guac + chips. The Brussels were my favorite, great flavor and cook. Love the cornmeal crust in the shrimp and chips were hearty and well seasoned.

Service- we interacted with the bartender, server, and manager. All were friendly, attentive, and professional. helpful to each other as well.

Space- love to high ceilings, great natural light and spacious. The place is huge. Two outdoor patios, main dining room, large bar, and casual seating area.

Really beautifully decorated space, it’s elevated yet not stuffy. I came for their happy hour and ordered the 2 Buck Shuck Oysters and Pork Tacos. Both very delicious, highly recommend. I think I’ll try the Duck Tostada and Beef empanada next time I come. The service was great, very dry attentive and they have a good sense of humor.

This is a cute spot for those wanting a bit more class during happy hour in Oakland.

The bathroom is clean as well (super important for me).
