This was a great hike. Fairly maintained trail that starts over by the Benbow SRA Campground. lots of up and downs, not for anyone with bad knees or health issues, unless you go very slow. We parked off of North Benbow Dr by Fish Crossing Rd. We went across the river and through the empty camp sites, the trail winds around and you end up with a view of the south side ofthe Historical Benbow Inn, when you get to the old Thrap Mill Site, on your side of the river. It’s really a great hike, I would suggest taking a picnic, as always pack in pack out, nobody likes to see garbage in these places. There are no restrooms or trash cans. this is trail and historical site only.
Extremely basic camping amenities. The front loop sites are sparsley shaded on the outside, main shade is in the inner sites of the loop. Staff was helpful and fairly friendly. The rate is a little steep considering the lack of amenities and firewood was twice what you would normally pay per bundle. Access to the nearby river is not bad but it’s definitely not disabled friendly, steep and narrow.
The recreation area was a thriving summer destination before the local dam was removed. We still use it as a kayak dock, but the grounds are a lot more “rustic.”

This place is great. My friends and I had so much fun. The Rangers are very nice, highly advised to reserve a camp site before going.
