Solid burrito, I think people say it’s the best because of sentimental value + the amazing price. Hard to find a burrito of this size and quality for under $15. Good taste, good portions, and above average taste. Highly recommend if you are in the area and want a no-fail option.
El Farolito consistently ranks as having one of the best burritos in San Francisco, so I finally had to check it out. Because it’s most famous for being the ultimate late-night institution, I stopped by after a night out with friends and ordered a carne asada burrito with everything.
The Critique: To be honest, the burrito was just okay. I wouldn’t rank it anywhere near the best in the city, and I’ve had a lot of burritos in SF. The primary issue was the execution and structural consistency; the burrito was layered vertically rather than mixed. The top third was mostly rice, the middle finally gave me some meat, and the bottom was a wall of beans. The great burritos in this city give you a perfect distribution of every ingredient in each bite.
The Flavors: Component-wise, the rice was rather dry and the beans were mid. The saving grace was the carne asada itself. It had a really nice, distinct smoky flavor that stood out.
The Insider Tips: Keep in mind that this place is strictly cash-only, so come prepared. Also, if the main seating area is packed, there is actually additional seating hidden away in the back patio that many first-timers completely miss.
Verdict: If you are looking for a massive, heavy late-night soak meal after midnight, El Farolito does the job. But if you’re looking for the pinnacle of Mission burrito craftsmanship, the search continues.
Good food here, never disappoints, remember they only accept cash. They do have a atm there as well. I ordered the Al pastor torta and it was very good. The area isn’t the best in terms of parking and there’s so much traffic/people in this area. If you have a chance to take it to go I’ll definitely recommend.
