There’s really nothing to this venture. It was just a tree that you drove through the trunk… Nothing special about that. The tree was held together with wires and it was a $15 charge to do this. There was nothing special about the area… No trails to explore… You just drove through the tree and exit.

This is a nice roadside stop to get up close and personal to giant redwoods. There are a couple of carved tree houses to go in and get pictures from. There is a live tree to drive through with a small car, but you can also walk through it. There is a nice gift shop and restrooms too

A genuinely lovely stop, and a pointed contrast to some of the other drive-thru trees on this stretch.
The tree itself is the most naturalistic of the bunch — it reads as a living redwood you happen to pass through, not a roadside gimmick. The drive-through is more aesthetic and less stage-managed than its counterparts, and the surrounding grounds are part of the appeal rather than an afterthought.
What set it apart was the generosity of the whole setup. You’re not just funneled through a trunk and waved off — there’s room to actually transit the property, take your time, and enjoy the space. The amenities were a welcome touch, and the overall feel was relaxed and unhurried. We were free to take it in at our own pace.
For the price and the experience, this is how a drive-thru tree should be done. If you’re choosing between trees on the Avenue, the Shrine is an easy recommendation. Worth the stop!

The Shrine Drive-Thru Tree was one of the highlights of my trip to Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Driving through a living redwood tree is a unique experience and definitely worth the stop. The property is well maintained and includes more than just the famous tree—you can also explore the tree houses, walk-through stump, and other interesting redwood attractions. The gift shop has plenty of souvenirs, and the whole place has a fun, nostalgic atmosphere. If you’re driving the Avenue of the Giants, this is a memorable stop for visitors of all ages. Highly recommended!

Great place for short or long stops! Pictures don’t do it justice. The tree houses were fun to explore and climb in. Personally, I think it’d be more enjoyable to walk through it instead of driving through. The drive-thru tree is 7×7.
The souvenir shop is packed with great items. The woman at the counter was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the Avenue of the Giants. She suggested great highlights to enjoy.
I’d suggest stopping here before further exploring the Coastal Redwoods.
