We visited Point Cabrillo Light Station on a foggy day, and the visit did not get off to the best start because we missed the turn from Highway 1.
Once we reached the parking lot, though, everything went smoothly.
There are clean restrooms at the parking area, and it is a good idea to use them before setting out because the lighthouse itself is quite a walk from the parking lot.
The walk is part of the experience, though, especially once the coastline and lighthouse come into view.
This was our second visit, and we were very pleased to see how much better the lighthouse looked than during our first visit more than 20 years ago.
Both the exterior and interior are now in excellent condition, and the entire site feels very well cared for.
We enjoyed exploring the area around the lighthouse and walking along the coast.
We also stopped briefly at the small aquarium and marine-life display in the building next to the lighthouse, which added another interesting dimension to the visit.
Inside the lighthouse, the docent was friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to answer questions.
One of the most impressive features is the beautiful Fresnel lens, which is clearly visible from outside and gives the lighthouse much of its character.
Our only regret was that the lantern room itself was not accessible during our visit.
Even so, between the restored lighthouse, the coastal scenery, the walk around the grounds, and the small aquarium, Point Cabrillo Light Station was well worth returning to after all these years.
Point Cabrillo Lighthouse is one of those places that feels calm the moment you get there. The walk to the lighthouse itself is beautiful, with open coastal views the whole way.
The lighthouse and surrounding buildings are well preserved, and the whole area has this quiet, almost timeless feel. I especially loved the ocean views , it’s the kind of spot where you just want to sit for a while and take everything in. Definitely worth the stop if you’re driving along the coast.
The lighthouse setting is amazing at sunset if it’s not foggy. From the main parking lot it is likely to be a windy and chilly half mile walk to the lighthouse but well worth it. The surrounding bluffs add to the scenery as well.
This lighthouse caught my attention when driving along the coast. My husband and I decided to go check it out while in town. The walk from the parking lot was not hard but you will get your step count in for the day so don’t forget your water in the car like we did lol. The lighthouse itself is breathtaking along the beautiful coastline of California. The lady inside the lighthouse was not overly friendly but not rude either. Small gift shop but many small treasures to take home. We enjoyed sitting on the picnic tables and soaking in the view before walking the trail back to our vehicle. Glad to have checked off visiting another lighthouse on the California Coast.
