If you’re visiting Van Damme State Park, I highly recommend combining the Pygmy Forest and Fern Canyon Trails into one loop. The full hike is about 5.5 miles and offers two completely different ecosystems in a single adventure.
The Pygmy Forest is fascinating, with its stunted, bonsai-like trees and unique landscape, while Fern Canyon feels like stepping into a prehistoric rainforest with towering redwoods, lush ferns, and peaceful creek crossings. The trails are well maintained, easy to follow, and provide a great mix of scenery and terrain.
One of the most unique and rewarding hikes on the Mendocino Coast. Definitely worth the time.

Perfect hike, 3.5 miles with decent elevation gain and manageable few more technical areas, absolutely gorgeous and shrouded in tree canopies.

Beautiful hike even in rainy weather. We wore raincoats and rainboots and my two kids (5 yo and 3 yo) loved the puddles, mud, and banana slugs. Very kid and family friendly!

Nice easy scenic trail. But beware the photos posted here of the impressive canyon walls full of ferns are from Redwoods NP, not Van Damme SP. There needs to be a serious cleaning of these deceptive reviews.

Fabulous trail surrounded on all sides by beautiful ferns! Be aware that you will get wet on this trail. Bring water shoes and roll up your pants. We didn’t and got very wet. Also, you will have to drive through water to get to the trailhead. Make sure your car can handle it before attempting to go. The road to get there is narrow and windy, but it’s worth it!!! Such beautiful ferns and trees! Depending on the time of year you go, you may need a reservation. Make sure to check and be prepared.
