I normally wouldn’t post this kind of review, but since I wrote directly to the hotel and got no response, decided to post it here:

“I’m taking the opportunity to respond to you directly instead of posting on Google or Yelp. While I do find comments helpful on those websites, I often take negative comments as a “one-off” and consider the reviewer could be a chronic complainer. I have written many positive reviews, so I’m not counting myself as a complainer (though you may respectfully disagree!).

My first concerns occurred when making the original reservations. I sent an email on 5/14 asking if your $25 cancellation fee applied to each night of the stay, or just one fee for the entire reservation. When I did not receive a reply, I called the next day and was able to speak with someone who confirmed there was one fee for cancellation of the reservation. No mention was made by the staff person acknowledging receipt of my email.

I had read your recommendation to call for reservations at Sage restaurant. On 6/4 I called and left a message that I wanted to make reservations for both nights at 6:30 p.m. I left my name and phone number. I did not receive a return call. On arriving at the restaurant, we were told that all tables were booked for the entire night.

When we got to our room, we referred to the Guest Directory which provided information about the days and hours of operation of the Axe and Rose Public House, as well as days of operation of Sage. When I inquired to confirm this information with a staff member, I was told the Axe and Rose had been closed for a year, and that Sage was open Thursday through Tuesday (again, different information than what was listed in the Guest Directory).

While there was constantly a note at the front desk that “we’ve stepped away from the desk…”, at no time during our stay did I ever see anyone at the front desk. I suggest that it would be more transparent to have a permanent sign indicating that all questions may be directed to your phone number.

Lastly, we had great difficulty unlocking and locking the door to our room. I flagged someone down who appeared to be preparing the restaurant for dinner service and explained our dilemma. The response was “well, this is a hundred-year-old hotel.” Again, a response along the lines of “I’m so sorry you’re having difficulty. Since this is an older hotel, sometimes you have to play with the key to get it to engage with the lock”, would have been much more welcoming vs the implied “What do you expect?!” It might even be nice to have a note on or in the envelope alerting guests to this idiosyncrasy.

The hotel itself was lovely, the antiques were beautiful, and we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfasts there. I only wish that the communication from the hotel itself and staff would have been more responsive.”

We just had a wonderful stay here. This historic hotel is a must see with multiple beautiful and cozy common areas, and each room is unique. We stayed in one with a bunk bed and king bed (perfect for a family of four) and although it was rustic it was so clean and spacious. It was nice and cool in the summer even on the second story and we immediately felt at home. The grounds are gorgeous, with gardens tastefully done and so many adorable porches to sit at and enjoy. I was in heaven. McCloud itself is beautiful with perfect views of Mt. Shasta from almost anywhere in town. Another wonderful thing- this hotel is SO dog friendly! This was our first trip taking our large dog and it’s not easy to find somewhere that feels luxurious, clean, AND allows pets, but McCloud Hotel pulls it off perfectly. Every staff member was incredibly friendly and kind, the breakfast was delicious, and the dinner we had at Sage restaurant was 5 Star. Even my kids remarked that the food tasted really “homemade”, and on a vacation, that is such a treat. Our compliments to the chef especially on the trout, steak, crab cakes and butter noodles! 10/10 experience and we WILL be back. We absolutely loved it here.

Had a lovely stay at this quaint location. The hotel is cozy and grand, with lots of yummy spots to sit and relax on the veranda, the lawn, or in the sitting rooms. We stayed with our pup and he was well welcomed with treats at reception.
The hotel made it easy to enjoy town and the nearby parks/trail access. Really enjoyed our stay, would recommend.

I recently stayed at the McCloud Hotel and it was a magical experience. The room was spacious, well-appointed, comfortable, and private. This vibe also applies to the property more generally. The gardens surrounding the hotel were serene, and the hotel offers lots of history. The on-site restaurant was a dining experience, with an intimate dining room and luxurious menu. It was the perfect place to stay while enjoying the surrounding natural beauty of the area, with Mt Shasta looming benevolent on the horizon amd just minutes from both McCloud Lake and the river. I hope I get a chance to return someday.

McCloud Hotel has a lot of charm thanks to its historic character, and it makes a great base for visiting nearby falls and hiking trails. Our room was spacious, but lacked a desk and was fairly noisy — we could hear nearby showers and restaurant noise since our room was right next to it. The restaurant food and service were okay, but nothing particularly memorable. Overall, a decent stay with pros and cons
