Beautiful, pretty beautiful historic house setting for great dining. The seating is in various rooms including the bar room – so you can dine casually or more formally. There are beautiful corners of it that make for a great romantic setting. Service is top notch and very helpful. Our favorite spot became the Grey Whale Bar – we bellied up to the bar almost everyday and ate at the bar too. It’s first come first served, so less dependent on having a ressie. The pasta special is fantastic and changes ingredients everyday. Servings are generous so plan accordingly. Cocktails were spectacular. Great vine selection. Go check it out – cheers!
We were a party of five on the Fourth of July for dinner. The restaurant was understaffed so service was lacking.
Food was mostly excellent with the exception of two things: 1) the add-on avocado was browned/spoiled and should not have been served 2) filet mignon was ordered medium but was on the rare side in the center. We ordered several appetizers and mains, plus dessert and appreciated the quality of the ingredients and the combos of flavors.
However, with multiple staff out (we overheard the manager say two people called out sick), our table was neglected. Food was served but plates wouldn’t get cleared even as courses were finished. Noone checked in to see how we were doing. When there was an issue with the food, there was no one to speak with about it.
We had dinner at Trillium Cafe the night before but felt we were in better care as our server was highly attentive throughout the evening.
One of the best meals we have had in a while. Started with the warm frizee and jammy egg salad, so delicious! Hubby had the duck, I had the fried chicken. I could have had a whole meal of just the collard greens, black eyed peas and ham that accompanied the chicken. Had the chocolate extravaganza for dessert. This restaurant is a must do for anyone visiting Mendocino.
The House has a wonderful old ambience. A history lesson on the occupants adorns the breezeway as you step inside. Service was excellent. Food was exquisitely prepared, but some of the mains fell flat as there just wasn’t enough contrasts against oil rich portions of the plate. The pork chop I had was beautifully cooked however it could have really used a crisp green or something with acid to balance it out.
It’s a charming place to visit in Mendocino. The food was good overall, though not perfect. The fish needed a bit more flavor, but we added the sauce from our oyster plate, which made it great. The duck was delicious, but the Brussels sprouts were too fried and dry. The salad was very good. Overall, it was a good experience.
