A deep dive into some serious Sonoma history today. Hanzell Vineyards doesn’t just make wine; they practically wrote the blueprint for modern California winemaking, pioneering the use of temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels back in the 1950s.

Getting to taste through their legendary heritage clones while looking out over those sun-drenched, rolling hillside vines is hard to beat. The absolute highlight, though, was getting to uncork and try a bottle of their 1982 Heritage Pinot Noir—a masterclass in how beautifully old-school California Pinot can age. From walking the historic barrel caves to tasting high above the valley floor, the current lineup beautifully lives up to the legacy.

Our visit to Hanzell Vineyards was by far the best winemaking and tasting tour we’ve ever experienced. Tony was an excellent guide! He was friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and deeply engaged in creating a thoughtful and enjoyable experience for us.

Even the drive up to Hanzell feels like part of the tour. Tucked into the Mayacamas Mountains overlooking Sonoma Valley, it is somewhat off the beaten path in the southern end of the Moon Mountain AVA.

We were the only two visitors during our tour, which made the experience feel especially personal. There was plenty of time to slow down and fully take in both the outstanding wines and the ambiance and history of this special place.

The present and the past felt very intertwined, not only through the displays of historic photos and original equipment, but also in the wines themselves.

I highly recommend a visit to Hanzell (note that it is by appointment only). Just be prepared to leave with a few bottles of their superb Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Great visit to Hanzell Winery! Their wines are truly beautiful—especially the Chardonnay, which really showcases their winemaking and commitment to purity and elegance. The tour itself was stunning, amazing views of Sonoma. The property that feels tucked away from everything. The wine cave was gorgeous as well and added a special touch to the experience, there is a beautiful photo opp there too.

Our host was incredibly knowledgeable and fun which made the visit even more enjoyable with insights about the estate, the vineyards, and their approach to crafting such exceptional wines. Highly recommend a visit!

Hanzell is Sonoma history brought to life on a hillside with sweeping valley views. The visit feels intimate and polished, from the drive through the vines to a calm, seated tasting that lets the wines shine. Our host was knowledgeable and gracious, weaving in vineyard and cellar details without rushing. The Chardonnay was precise and layered with vibrant acidity and a long, mineral finish, and the Pinot Noir showed beautiful structure, red fruit, and quiet power. Every pour felt thoughtful and true to place.

Service is effortless, the setting is serene, and the focus is squarely on craftsmanship. Give yourself time to enjoy the grounds and the view, because it’s part of the magic. If you love classic Sonoma wines presented with care and depth, this is a must. An easy five stars.
