Easy, super close to airport, access to beach, access to river, access to seals.

I love taking hikes and I especially love a good hike that includes an opportunity to take in the sunrise or sunset. The Hammond Coastal Trail in Northern California proved to be an excellent choice for a late evening stroll, right before the sun went down.

This trail is close to McKinleyville and Arcata and if you walk the full trail, part of it will take you right past the Arcata/Eureka Airport. I limited my hike to a section that was close to the Pacific Ocean, since my goal was to witness the sunset. I didn’t have too much trouble finding a free place to park, close to the trail, and I quickly made my way down the paved path.

Since this trail is paved, you can enjoy it by bicycle or on foot. I spent my time walking along the trail. It was clean and accented in several spots by overhanging trees. It’s dog friendly, too.

I found my walk along the trail quiet and peaceful, and a great way to unwind while I watched the beautiful sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Some sections of the trail take you close enough to restaurants, restrooms, etc, that you can stop for a quick break. The part I walked didn’t have any amenities, but it was exactly what I wanted and needed: A quiet walk where the only noise was the sound of the ocean waves.

Hammond Coastal Trail is a nice trail to walk or bicycle and a great choice for a relaxing stroll right before sunset. I plan to walk here again the next time I visit my daughter in Arcata.

Meh. It’s a bike trail, which automatically makes it better than any road, but it feels like a forgotten vestige of the 90s. The trail surface is bumpy, sloped, and it switches around from asphalt to gravel and dirt to low-er traffic roads to even decommissioned roads quite frequently. I personally much prefer the new bicycle trail between Arcata and Eureka. This would gain more usefulness by a direct connection to Arcata, better maintenance, and deconfliction from automobiles.

Great trail suitable for any type of bike. There are two, very short, steep grades, at either end of the trail. Our tiny, folding, electric bikes had no trouble negotiating them.

Our new favorite bike trail! And to end up at Toni’s for our favorite burger couldn’t be a better day…
