While there isn’t a lot left of the original fort, it was interesting to walk the short trail and learn a bit about the history of the fort and the local lumber industry. Some of the signs were in poor repair and really need replacing. Nice place to walk a dog or get some light exercise while learning a bit of local history.
This is decent place to host a kids birthday party. The field is open with plenty of grass for games and play.
It is a great place to fly a kite with children. The wind comes off the coast and gives great uplift. All in all, a nice relaxing grassy area with some cool historic stuff to look at.
If you’re passing through Eureka and enjoy a little history mixed with fresh air, Fort Humboldt State Historic Park is a great stop. The fort sits up on a hill overlooking the town and bay, which gives you some really nice views while you explore the grounds.
One of the highlights is the interpretive walking trail that loops around the fort. Along the path you’ll find informational signs explaining the history of the site, the military presence here in the 1800s, and how the area developed during the early logging era. It’s a relaxed walk, not strenuous, but enough to stretch your legs and enjoy the scenery.
They also have displays about the historic logging equipment used in Northern California, which adds another interesting layer to the visit. It’s a quiet spot, well maintained, and perfect for anyone who enjoys local history, photography, or just getting outside for a bit.
Definitely worth a stop if you’re exploring Eureka or driving the Northern California coast.
