Looking for a very authentic Mexican restaurant this is where the recommendations lead my son and I on the evening of his birthday. Going on the recommendations of Alex who was running the show let us both in the direction of some amazing food. With explanations of how things are made with and what ingredients from what part of Mexico and why not only were we eating great food we were learning about great food in a way that was actually very intriguing. We set in the front of the restaurant looking outside and even though we got there shortly before it closed we were treated amazing. With drink recommendations also leading Us in the way of the Mexican old fashioned. With the spice level of the authentic food my son was definitely filling it but had to keep going in because he said it was delicious. I had the stuffed poblano pepper which was amazing. A traditional Mexican cake desert was on the house. Alex said for my son’s birthday it was on him.. I would recommend anybody in the San Diego or within 50 Mi driving distance to this place for sure. The atmosphere of the restaurant West spectacular the decor was great. And definitely the service and food. We parked directly out front on the street which was easy. Would recommend this restaurant for a single person, a date, a birthday or even for the entire family. Let Alex know you read great reviews about him and the restaurant.
Amazing!!!
Vibes 10/10
Food 9.5/10
Drinks 10/10
Dessert 10/10
Service 11/10
*Bathroom 10/10 (random but the bathroom was cute and clean)
Truly such a gem! We got the chiles en nogada and something with shrimp and nopales and they were both so good!! Hadn’t had such good chiles en nogada since Laredo, MX.
The vibes were just so cozy and elegant too! Fancy but not too stuffy with fun background music. The waiter was perfect! Gave GREAT recommendations and kept out horchata and cafe going to enjoy with the food and desserts. Not sure if the restaurant is new but everything also seemed made and served with that special touch that made it all look and taste great (e.g. fresh cinnamon sticks, fresh strawberries, fresh apples)
For reference, we got the following:
-Horchata 10/10 (best we’ve had since leaving Texas. I was a little sad when I saw the tiny cup, but they give refills so no complaints!)
-The Oaxaca and Jalisco old fashions 10/10 (we got the regular and the mezcal one and they were both perfectly smoky and tasty! Garnished beautifully! One of the best, if not the best, old fashions we’ve had in SD)
-The niña fresa 10/10 (fresh strawberries and so refreshing!)
-Cafe de Olla 10/10 (hot, delicious, and served in a cute mug!)
-Chiles en nogada 10/10 (delicious, fresh, sweet, savory, perfect texture!)
-something with shrimp and nopales with crema and queso on a tortilla 10/10 (disappointed the pollo con mole was out, but the nice server recommended the shrimp dish and it did not disappoint)
-frijoles con “veneno”- 5/10 (these were a little too spicy for my liking to where I couldn’t enjoy them. But maybe I’m just a baby. I could still taste the good flavors through the spice though and they came topped with onions, queso fresco, and chicharrónes. So not bad, just not as good as the other items and the chicharrones were a little too hard for me as well) (that said, my husband hates beans and he thought they were pretty good and not too spicy, so maybe it was just me)
-I think it was called jaiba? 6.5/10 (these were pretty good too! But they were also too spicy for my liking and needed a lot more lemon or lime to bring out the fish flavor)
-Flan de Elote 10/10 as a dessert 8/10 as flan (it was delicious and creamy and the diced apple with the caramel or cajeta made a perfect September treat. I was so full but still basically managed to finish the whole thing because it was so good!) (but if you’re in the mood for a traditional flan, it’ll be a little different)
We splurged since it was día de la independencia, and the ticket came out to around $150. However I’m sure we could return and spend less since the prices weren’t too crazy.
Wish I would’ve gotten more pics, but the food was too delicious and by the time I remembered everything was half eaten lol.
Our friends recommended Fonda del Barrio and now we owe them a dinner there! Our family of 4 dined there on July 23 for a birthday dinner and upon walking in, were greeted by Jessica who is a role model for hospitality. She was authentic and friendly and it was so great to have as our server. Ellie was our hostess and checked on us and added to our great experience.
The food? OMG; so flavorful, great presentation, all wonderful. We have added Fonda del Barrio to our list of top restaurants in SD and will recommend to everyone. Can’t wait to go back!
This restaurant was so delicious and unique. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in San Diego but not many that focus on southern Mexico cuisine. The server told us they focus on oaxacan food and that chile en nogada is the national food of mexico. Everything was delicious. I loved the mango habanero aguachile, even if it was too spicy for me. The chile en nogada was sooo creamy and delicious. I loved the pomegranate to balance all the creamy umami flavor. My partner had the fish which was very nice and light. We also tried several cocktails which all came with fresh fruit, but my favorite was the watermelon margarita which actually had pieces of fresh watermelon.
Our friends had the filet mignon and the chile relleno which they said were noth amazing.
