Went here after a long day on Mount Tamalpais…it was undoubtedly the best part of the trip. We came at around 8:30pm yesterday and almost nobody was there—It was cozy and relaxing. The server (whose name I unfortunately didn’t catch) was amazing; he was funny, sweet, and attentive. I ordered a chocolate malt and it was absolutely delicious!! To eat, I got the chili bowl and was not disappointed. I scarfed that, along with the cornbread muffin, down quick lol. I also stole a bite of my mom’s chicken fried steak and YUM. Food came out super fast, and the prices were reasonable! Overall, great place. 🙂

The staff here are genuinely friendly and the customer service is a highlight — you feel welcomed every time you walk in. The food is solid diner fare and portions are generous. My one gripe is the lack of vegan options on the menu. For plant-based diners, there’s very little to choose from, which holds it back from a higher rating. Great spot if you eat everything, but they could do more to accommodate vegan guests.

Excellent service and a great atmosphere!
This location is a complete 180 from others I’ve visited. I’ve been here three times now, and every single visit has been consistently excellent. The service is top-notch—attentive without being overbearing—and the food quality is always high.

The atmosphere is pleasant and inviting, and I was even impressed by how clean they keep the facilities, including the restrooms. If you’re looking for the best version of Blackbird Diner, this San Rafael spot is definitely the one to visit. I have nothing negative to say!

I’ve been to several other Black Bear Diner locations where the food and presentation are great, but this visit was a total disappointment. From the kitchen to the floor, this location is not meeting the standard.
    The Food:
    Salmon: Overcooked and incredibly dry.
Broccoli: Mushy, soggy, and completely unappetizing.
Chicken: No flavor or seasoning whatsoever.
Beans with Bacon: Had an awful taste—we couldn’t even eat them.
    The Service:
To make matters worse, the customer service was not good. The staff seemed uninterested and unhelpful, making us feel more like an inconvenience than guests.
I know how good Black Bear Diner can be, but this specific location missed the mark in every category. I won’t be coming back to this one.

The food was fine, but the service was extremely disappointing. When we arrived, we were told to wait even though the restaurant was not crowded. The table we were first seated at was not prepared with utensils, and the staff member who initially guided us never came back to take our order.

Later, another staff member (a younger man with a beard) came instead, and he was polite and helpful. When I asked again about sitting by the window, he kindly moved us there without any problem. His professionalism was appreciated, but it highlighted the poor attitude of the first staff member who seemed dismissive.

During our meal, we noticed other customers arriving after us who were seated immediately at window tables without having to wait at all. This inconsistency in treatment made us feel singled out and disrespected, and it came across as discriminatory.

Overall, while the food was good, the service left a very negative impression. Unless the staff attitude and fairness in seating are improved, I would not consider coming back or recommending this location.
