We started a new tradition of camping at Schoolhouse Canyon every year. The property is stunning, I’ve never stayed at a more well maintained campground. When you walk to the private beach access, there are fruit trees and berry bushes and a great little bay on the Russian River. The family who runs this campground has had the property since the gold rush and are an incredible example of what true land stewardship should look like.

There is no doubt that Schoolhouse Canyon Campground is one of the best campgrounds I have ever visited. The campground itself is beautiful, clean, and well maintained. Unfortunately, my experience with the owner, Chris, was very disappointing. I found him to be rude, dismissive, and lacking basic hospitality. During our interactions, he repeatedly asked questions such as, “Do you understand?” and “Do you understand English?” in a manner that I found disrespectful. As a person of color, I felt that I was treated differently from other guests. I also noticed that he was friendly and welcoming toward White guests, providing them with information about the library and Wi-Fi facilities. We were never given that same information during our two-night stay. On the first day, I thought I might have been overreacting, so I chose to ignore it. However, his behavior continued the following day, leaving me with the impression that this was not an isolated incident. While the campground itself is excellent and I would highly recommend it based on its location and facilities, the way we were treated by the owner significantly detracted from our experience.

What a wonderful campground. Hosts are friendly and helpful. Place is excellently maintained. Bathrooms are very clean, showers hot (bring quarters), grounds are near perfect.

We had an amazing stay at Schoolhouse Canyon Campground. The campground is very peaceful, well-maintained, and surrounded by beautiful Redwoods. Our site (#29) felt so spacious, and it was a great place to relax and enjoy nature. The facilities were very clean, a big plus for me, and the staff (Chris) was so friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Loved the private beach – you get to walk past fruit trees!
The location is also convenient for exploring the surrounding towns & coast while still feeling tucked away from the crowds. We definitely will be staying here again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet camping getaway by the river & under the redwoods!

First time camping here and I was blown away. Chris and his wife were super friendly and took care of our group from the very first phone call to reserve a site, to check-in, and even when we left. Yes, the place has rules, but they keep out the rowdy crowd. The bathrooms were spotless and cleaned multiple times a day and the campgrounds were spotless.
River access is right across the road. There are cars, but it’s simple to just wait for a quick break before crossing. It’s not a big deal and is an opportunity to teach your kids about how to cross a 2 lane road with traffic. Plus, it’s a long straight away so you can see traffic/cars coming way ahead. I’d recommend booking in the adult section if you want less kid noise. The only trade-off is the bathrooms are about a two-minute walk since the bathhouse is in the family area.
As for reviews saying the campground manager hovers or comes by at night to tell people to be quiet, I can only say that didn’t happen to us and we stayed up till midnight both nights with a fire. He never came by late at night or “watched” us. My guess is those folks were being loud and disturbing others, so he had to step in. If you’re looking to throw a rager, this isn’t the place. If you want a clean, friendly, well-run campground, it’s perfect.
