The bread bowl clam chowder was incredible and the fish and calamari were fresh and batter was light and crispy. Service was also exceptional. Our food came out so quickly. Can’t wait to go back!

This has become my birthday tradition every year. We usually stay at Pillar Point RV Resort or Oceano Resort Hotel in June or July. I was pleasantly surprised to see they’re finally accepting credit cards! It was a relief because I forgot cash and an ATM card lol One thing to keep in mind, they close from around 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. to change their frying oil. We arrived around 4:00 p.m. and were the first ones on the waiting list, even though the restaurant was already full. The wait was only about 30 minutes. While I waited inside, the kids played in the sandy area behind the restaurant, which helped pass the time.
Once we were seated, the food came out quickly. You can really tell they take pride in changing the oil because everything tasted incredibly fresh, light, and crispy instead of greasy. My kids absolutely love the fish and chips here, and the tempura-style batter is one of the reasons we keep coming back. The portions are generous and definitely worth the wait.
Most menu items can also be ordered from the outdoor order window, but it was chilly during our visit, so we wanted to eat inside instead.
We’ll definitely be back again on our next Half Moon Bay trip.

I recently visited Barbara’s Fishtrap and had a very enjoyable overall dining experience, especially if you are looking for fresh, straightforward seafood right by the coast in Half Moon Bay.
The quality of the seafood stood out immediately. Everything tasted fresh and well-prepared, without being overly complicated or heavily seasoned. I would especially recommend the seafood pasta and the fried fish. The fried fish had a nice crisp texture on the outside while still remaining tender and moist inside, which is exactly what you hope for in a place specializing in casual seafood. The seafood pasta was also flavorful and satisfying, with a good balance of ingredients and portion size.
One pleasant surprise was the bread served with the meal—it was genuinely very good and paired well with the dishes. The salad, on the other hand, was more average and didn’t stand out compared to the seafood items. It felt more like a standard side rather than something memorable.
The service was solid overall. In particular, the owner (or manager, often referred to as the “boss lady”) was very friendly and attentive, which added a personal and welcoming touch to the experience. That kind of hospitality definitely improves the overall atmosphere of the restaurant.
Another highlight is the location. The restaurant sits right by the ocean, and the nearby sea view is beautiful. It makes the whole dining experience feel more relaxed and scenic, especially if you manage to get a good time to sit and enjoy the surroundings.
That said, this place is extremely popular. It is often very crowded, with long lines forming regularly. In our case, we waited about 30 minutes before getting a table. There are also many takeout customers, which shows how busy and well-loved the restaurant is. Despite the wait, the turnover is fairly steady, and the line does move.
Overall, Barbara’s Fishtrap is a classic coastal seafood spot with fresh food, friendly service, and a great ocean-side atmosphere. The wait can be long, but the experience and quality of the food make it worthwhile.

We went to Barbara’s Fish Trap (takeout window) on Sunday around 11:45 am. We had to wait in line about 30 min to order and then we got our food in about 15 min. There were so many tasty looking options on the menu – we had a hard time picking. There is very limited seating. A few picnic tables with benches and then standing room at some elevated tables.
Clam Chowder in Sourdough Bread Bowl – this was good but not extra special. I felt like the clam chowder may have had too much pepper in it but I still enjoyed it
Mini Fish Trap Tempura – this was fun sampler which came with fish, zuchinni, scallops, prawns, calamari, and fries
Dungeness Crab Louie Salad – this was a really a entree salad. The greens were fresh and the salad had beans, avocado, and beets in it. It was a good portion of crab too
Corn Fritters – these were my favorite. I love corn and the fritters had such a great corn flavor
I would definitely eat at Barbara’s Fish Trap again, but only if the line was short. Waiting for 30 min in line to order and then hunting for a table is a little annoying, but maybe that is why you can eat at the sit down restaurant.
